Elena Citkowitz

CITKOWITZ, DR. ELENA Dr. Elena Citkowitz, 74 years old, died peacefully on June 25, 2013 in the presence of her loving family, after a courageous struggle with cancer. The daughter of Israel Citkowitz and Helen Simon Citkowitz, Elena was born in the Bronx where she attended the Fieldston Ethical Culture School, then Cornell University. She received her PhD from Columbia University, her MD from Yale University and was a board certified Internist and Lipidologist. She was a member of the Department of Medicine at the Hospital of St. Raphael, and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Yale Medical School. Elena was an inveterate environmentalist, passionate about conservation causes and the preservation of animal life. She is survived by her husband Joseph F. Hoffman, her brother Robert, her half-sister Evgenia, her niece Claudia, her nephews Peter Horst and Richard E. Hoffman, and her uncle Robert Simon. Elena was more precious than a mockingbird. Funeral services will be private with a memorial held at Yale in the Fall. The family asks that all remembrances should be made to Conservation International, the World Wildlife Fund, or the African Wildlife Foundation.
