LaVerne Russell Obituary
RUSSELL, LaVERNE LaVerne Millicent (Rucks) Russell passed peacefully into eternal rest on October 11, 2013 at the age of 87. LaVerne was born on July 23, 1926 in New Kensington, Pa. At the age of six, she came with her parents, the late Cecelia and John Rucks, to McKeesport, Pa., where she attended the city's public schools. She graduated from high school in 1944 after distinguishing herself as an award-winning member of the school's famed debate club, which performed at competitions throughout Western Pa. Two sisters, Thelma and Irma, are predeceased. After high school graduation, LaVerne enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C. where she majored in Sociology and Drama. In her junior year, she left Howard following the unexpected death of her mother. After returning home, LaVerne began what would become her life-long work with youth and social service agencies. A long time active member of her beloved First Baptist Church in Milford, CT., she served on various committees and as chair of the Helping Hand Ministry to which she devoted an immense amount of energy and love. LaVerne leaves to mourn her passing and celebrate her lifetime accomplishments her devoted husband, Edgar Russell, Jr., with whom she has celebrated 58 years of marriage. Five children: Faith Cecelia Williams (Gregory) of Trenton N.J.; Bridgette Patrice Russell of New Haven CT.; Lisa Millicent Charles (Dexter) of Maplewood N.J.; Edgar Russell, III ( Jestina) of Frederick, MD.; John Rucks Russell (Simone) of Houston, Texas. Twelve grandchildren: Kia Marie Whitaker; Marcus Troy Whitaker; Joseph Delbo; Summer Ashley Martin; Trevor Russell Martin; Dylan Hollingsworth Charles; Candice Millicent Charles; Adam Edgar Charles; Lacoy Leslieann Francis; Jacob Shayne Russell; Edgar Rucks Russell, IV.; and Christopher Lucas Russell. One great granddaughter; Zionna Kiarah White. One cousin; Michael Turner. In addition, one sister-in-law, four brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews; and her church family at First Baptist, including, especially her beloved Pastor, his wife and family. Homegoing services will be held at First Baptist Church, 28 North Street, Milford, CT on Friday, October 18, at 11am. Viewing will be from 9am to 11am at the church.
