THOMAS SICCAMA Obituary

SICCAMA, THOMAS ‘TOM’ Thomas “Tom” Siccama, 78, of Shelburne, VT passed away peacefully on October 3, 2014 at Vermont Respite House in Williston with his family by his side. Tom was born July 6, 1936, in Rahway, NJ to Theodore and Alaneda Siccama. As a young boy growing up in rural New Jersey near his Grandfather’s and Grandmother’s farm, he always enjoyed being outdoors in the forest or spending time with the chickens, and garden at the farm. This is what inspired his love of nature and the natural world. Tom was a quiet man who loved his garden, huge raspberry patch and his cats. Tom attended the University of Vermont where he obtained his Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. He was invited to teach at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (FES) by Professor Herbert Bormann as a PostDoctoral student and continued to teach at the Yale FES for 42 years as a professor of Forest Ecology and Director of Field Studies. He was well known for his courses, where he would take students into the forests and fields of New England to learn about the local ecosystems. He received the Forestry school’s top teaching and advising award - four times- and authored or co-authored more than 120 research papers. Tom began his career-long participation in the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in 1966. His innovative research on the nutrient dynamics of the vegetation and soils over the next 46 years helped to establish Hubbard Brook as the world’s leading study on forested ecosystems. The results from his scholarship informed public policy debates regarding acid rain, sustainable forestry, and climate change. In addition, his commitment to the collection and conservation of long-term data not only established an invaluable baseline by which to measure the impact of environmental stressors on these forests but also inspired former students to carry on his work at Hubbard Brook. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Judith Siccama of Shelburne, VT, his daughter Carolyn Siccama and her husband, Chris Trapeni, and his granddaughter Carly Trapeni of Shelburne. Sister-in-law Sharon Roa and her husband Glen Roa. Brother-in-law George Pillsbury and his wife Celine Pillsbury. And his cat, Willow. A private ceremony will be held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Shore Line Trolley Museum, 17 River Street, East Haven, CT 06512.

Extremely difficult to find another individual and/or teacher as good and dedicated as Tom. I attended a couple of courses offered at YALE (FES) in late 2001, and can assure you that Professor Siccama was out of this world.

Very, very sorry to hear he passed away.

Cordially,

Tom Siccama was out of this world; his huge collection of baseball caps was only surpassed by his extreme love for the environment. I was privileged to attend one of his courses at Yale and never forget what he said: "squeze and caress the soil, it will answer and talk to you."
I am already missing this great teacher.

Tom contributed many ideas and a great deal of data to Hubbard Brook over the decades. I enjoyed sharing some bits of that work with him, and always enjoyed his company. I've missed interacting with him in my retirement years.

I knew Tom only from my time at Hubbard Brook, but that spanned some 20 years. He was an inspiration and tremendous fun to be around. I will miss him.

to the Siccama family-

I was one of Tom's students at Yale and was privileged to be his TA for one term in the terrestrial ecosystems course. He was an inspirational teacher and one of the most memorable people I have ever known. I haven't done field biology in decades, but hardly a week goes by that I don't recall and make good use of something I learned from Tom. He was a unique individual whose influence will continue to be felt for a very long time. He will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends,

As a student in Tom's Soil Science class, I had the pleasure of following him out the old trolly tracks into the Farm River Salt Marsh to dig in the mud and learn about that ecosystem. Those field trips and his work on lead pollution inspired my master's project in that same marsh. And as we we traveled to field sites around New England, we all marveled at his "drive by" tree ID and impromptu lectures on how to read the landscape. Twenty-five years later, I still think of him teaching us why Vermont and New Hampshire are so different - it's all in the rocks! And that crazy tally we helped him keep of how long one spends at stop lights over a lifetime - I hope he found his answer to that nagging question. A beloved treasure for so many of us at YFES.

Learned today of Tom's passing and just wanted to say that he was a man I remembered from college at UVM when I was an undergraduate student working with Hub Vogelmann. We hiked Camel's hump together several times and he had an impact on my understanding of climate change and the fauna and flora of Vermont. I have lived in Hawaii since 1970 but get to return to Vermont frequently and still love the state and it's mountains. My sympathy to his family.
