EDGAR VAUGHN Obituary

VAUGHN, EDGAR LEON, JR. Edgar Leon Vaughn, Jr., 79, passed away on Tuesday June 30th, at Maplewood at Orange. Ed was born on July 27th, 1935, to Edgar and Kathryn Vaughn of 38 Marsh Hill Road, Orange, where the family business, Vaughn Nurseries, was established in 1934. Ed enjoyed growing that business, loved being an active member of the community and was very proud of his 37 year tenure as Tree Warden for the Town of Orange. Ed was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois Guthridge, and his second wife, Penny Vaughn. He is survived by his son Dave Vaughn and his wife Carol of Onley, Virginia; son Bruce Vaughn and his wife Patty O’Brien of Canberra, Australia; daughter Carolyn Vaughn and her husband Justin Green of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Clara and Melody Vaughn, Aelfred and Lachlan Vaughn, and Cleo and Ludo Green; his sister Kathryn Sires and her husband Bob of North Fort Myers, Florida, and his sister Cheryl Sullivan and her husband Joe of Orange; as well as several nieces and nephews. In his youth Ed was a keen sportsman. He won the Scholar Athlete award at Hillhouse High School and as a college undergraduate, Ed played baseball and football for MIT and played hockey for Cornell University, where he graduated. He also earned two graduate degrees – one in Botany from Southern Connecticut State University and a second in Silviculture from Yale University’s School of Forestry. Ed was proud of his service in the Connecticut Air National Guard. Highlights of his professional career include landscaping the Connecticut State Capitol and designing the arboretum in Milford. Ed was very fond of music, singing, crossword puzzles, biking, traveling, writing poetry and socializing with friends. He loved the outdoors, especially when pacing job sites, rambling through forests and climbing mountains. Ed truly loved spending time at the family cabin on Highland Lake, Stoddard, NH, where he enjoyed hiking, canoeing, boating or simply listening to the loons. A memorial service to celebrate Ed’s life will be held on Friday July 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at the Orange Congregational Church, 205 Meeting House Lane in Orange. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests: www.forestsociety.org

Cannot believe time has passed so quickly, but cannot let this anniversary pass without again thanking the family for it was Ed that made my mom's last year of her life so full of JOY and peace knowing your Dad at Maplewood. In appreciation.

Ed was my professor during an intersession course in Horticulture back in the early 1980's at University of New Haven. He was also on the examining board when I went for my CT Arborist license. Ed was a great teacher that help me get my company to the next level and has now been in business 39 years and going. His knowledge & personality is something I have remembered to this day. A great man has passed but will be remembered.

Dear Vaughn Family, Your Dad was an angel to me and my family. His love and support and caring personality warmed my mother, Cindy's heart, and made her days at Maplewood full of fun, dancing and peace. I will never forget this.... With love and sympathy...He was such a great MAN, now taking his rightful place in heaven.
