BERNARD FORGET Obituary

FORGET, BERNARD GREGOIRE, MD Bernard Gregoire Forget, M.D., on November 6, 2015 at the age of 76. Dear husband of Bernadette and loving father of Elizabeth Forget, Jacqueline Forget McKeon (Christopher) and Thomas Forget. Dr. Forget is also survived by his sister Louise Forget Guertin and grandchildren Katherine, Caroline, and Michael McKeon. Dr. Forget was the beloved son of the late Dr. Ulysse and Germaine Forget and brother of the late Hélène Forget Héroux. Dr. Forget, born in Fall River, MA, earned a B.A. from the University of Montreal in 1959 and an M.D.C.M. from McGill University in 1963, where he was class valedictorian. Dr. Forget was a renowned hematologist and scientist who made pioneering contributions to the study of red cells, hemoglobin, and the genetics of blood disorders. During his long and distinguished career as Professor of Medicine and Human Genetics at Yale University School of Medicine, he authored many significant publications and held several leadership positions, including Section Chief of Hematology and Associate Dean for Research Affairs. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 2011. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the recipient of the Yale Cancer Center Lifetime Achievement Award and many other honors. Bernie was extremely proud of his three children, in whom he instilled his love of learning and the value of integrity. In his three grandchildren, whom he adored, those qualities and his spirit promise to live on. He deeply valued the many close friendships he cultivated over his lifetime, which filled his and Bernadette’s lives with love and laughter. Bernie loved classical music, reading the New York Times, and fishing and stargazing in his native Rhode Island. He enjoyed traveling the world and reached nearly every corner during his life. His favorite destination was Paris, where he and Bernadette both lived and vacationed many times over their 50 years of marriage. A Catholic Mass will be held at St. George Church On The Green, 33 Whitfield St. Guilford, CT on November 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet family and friends prior to the Mass from 10 -11 in the Church Hall. I first met Bernie when I was a postdoc with Tom Maniatis in the late 1970's. HIs lab and ours were isolating globin genes. His lab shared some cDNA clones and we provided them with a library of genomic DNA clones - both labs benefitted greatly from the the generous sharing. I got to know him better over the next few decades. I learned much from Bernie, and enjoyed every time I engaged with him, whether at meetings, grant reviews, or writing a review together. He was truly a gentleman, generous in advice and in sharing knowledge and insights. He will be missed deeply.

Bernie was Section Chief of Hematology and I had the pleasure of being in his first hematology fellowship class at Yale beginning in
1977. His influence was amazing and set me off on a wonderful
career in hematology. I was fortunate to have him help steer my career when it was at such a young age.

Bernie and I were colleagues some years ago our paths intersecting during fellowship, as junior faculty in Boston and as occasional carousing mates at the annual ASH meetings. I admired Bernie for many things: his wonderful knowledge of hematology, his fine teaching, his great skills as a scientist but above all as a caring, compassionate person. His memory will always be with me.

Bernie Forget was one of the most wonderful mentors and colleagues I ever met. I am truly lucky to have known him, and I am devastated that he passed away so young. Bernie is truly an international leader in Hematology, and he was the heart and soul of Clinical and Investigative Hematology at Yale. I already miss him.

Bernadette, Bill and I would like to express our heartfelt condolences, to you and your family, for the passing of Bernie. During my years as a Care Coordinator on 8W it was such a pleasure to work with him. His intelligence, compassion, and sensitivity of the most difficult of situations was a testament to his exquisite ability as a clinician. He nurtured relationships with staff and colleagues, and made himself accessible to all who looked to him for guidance. In the most difficult of family meetings he always left the patient and family with a sense of hope, his manner reassured them that they were in the best of hands. He was a man of men, and the world was a better place, oncology/hematology was a better place because of him. I know you say he liked classical music, but I can remember he requested Jeramiar was a bullfrog at a wedding. Just when you think you knew Bernie, he would throw you a curve. I hope that the wonderful memories you have will sustain you during this difficult time and for the years to come, as it will all that knew and loved him. Bill and Carol

For roughly two years (2010-2012), I had the absolute pleasure to work in the same office as Bernie. Although our jobs were not directly related and had no real work related discussions with him, each morning he would arrive in the office and greet me respectfully and ask how may day was going. Over those two years I got to know Bernie fairly well and we would talk about Rhode Island quite a bit. He was as genuine and sincere as you can get, not a mean bone in his body. Never patronizing and never condescending, Bernie always treated me with dignity and with kindness. Years later when I would bump into him on occasion, he would still remember my name. A true gentleman, and a throwback to simpler time.

I was a patient of Dr. Forget's. After a very long search and seeing many hematologists I finally found Dr. Forget. He was the first doctor that treated me like an individual and not a number/statistic. Also, when he decided to retire from clinical practice he made sure to pair me with a fellow doctor who is also a perfect fit. He will be sorely missed. My condolences to the entire Forget Family. May his soul rest in peace.

Bernie's brilliance served as a resource for many of us during the four years of medical school. It carried on after graduation and he earned well-deserved accolades for his contributions to the field of hematology.

Bernie was an honored member of our class quiet and conscientious but with remarkable good humor. He wore his intellect well, and it was no surprise that he was McGill's gold medalist in the class of 1963. Our condolences to the family.
