DONALD SCHARF Obituary

SCHARF, DONALD F. Donald F. Scharf, 83, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2016 at the Guilford House in Guilford, CT. He was born on June 25, 1933 in Providence, RI, to Albert Scharf, Sr. and Catherine (Flood) Scharf. Don grew up in Hamden, CT. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in West Haven, CT in 1951. After high school, he attended college at Yale University where he received his degree in 1955. After college Don lived in New York City and then Madison, CT. Following a successful business career in executive recruitment, Don “retired” to become a volunteer Assistant for Athletic Development at Yale University. Don’s commitment and generosity of time and energy to Yale and Yale athletics was unprecedented. Not only did he serve on a myriad of athletic boards at Yale, he was a lifetime member and past president of the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Don was also an enthusiastic supporter of his high school, Notre Dame. In addition to his volunteer work with athletics, he was a Berkeley College Fellow and had been awarded the Elm and Ivy Award and the Yale medal. Don was a longtime resident of Madison and enjoyed being with his many friends at the Madison Beach Club. Don is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Al and Marie Scharf of Wallingford, CT; his niece and her husband, Stacie (Scharf) Davis and Chris Davis and their son CJ Davis, all of Spring Lake, NJ. At the request of the deceased, no funeral services will be held. The burial will be private. A memorial mass will be held at a future date. The family requests memorial donations be made to Notre Dame High School, One Notre Dame Way, West Haven, CT 06516 or Yale University, Office of Development, PO Box 2038, New Haven, CT 06521.

Don is a Notre Dame class mate and a dear friend. I have fond memories of Don and our gang at school dances, sporting events and reunions over the years. I am sorry I could not be closer to him. I will keep him in my prayers.
