Barbara Ann Benson Fairclough

HAMPTON -- Barbara Ann Benson Fairclough, 85, of Hampton, died Saturday, April 26, 2014, at home.

Born in Atlanta, Ga., Barbara was a longtime resident of Hampton.

She attended Salem Academy in North Carolina, Stephens College in Missouri and Vassar College in New York, Class of 1950. She was both a concert violinist as well as a pianist. Her many artistic talents included drawing and poetry. She was also an avid gardener at both of her and John's farms in New Jersey and Vermont.

Barbara was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

The daughter of the late Lee Benson and Idelia Andrews Benson, Barbara is survived by her husband of 63 years, John H. Fairclough; three sons, John L. Fairclough, James H. Fairclough and wife, Robin, and Andrew N.B. Fairclough and wife, Lisa, all of Newton; one sister, Frances Benson Head of Gainesville, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Andrew N.B. Fairclough Jr. and wife, Genevieve, of Morristown, James H. Fairclough II of Litchfield, Conn., Brian Fairclough of Newton, Courtney Fairclough of New York, N.Y., and Ryan C. Fairclough of Newton.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 30, at the First Presbyterian Church of Newton, 54 High St., Newton, followed by a noon funeral service at the church. Interment will be private.
