SANDYSTON - Dr. John Elias Rahoche, 79, of Sandyston and a longtime resident of the area, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y.
He was born Aug. 2, 1934, in Linden, the son of the late John Rahoche and the late Mary Popowich Rahoche.
Dr. John Rahoche married Arlene K. Boelhower 53 years ago on June 4, 1960, in St. George's Greek Catholic Church, Linden.
He was a graduate of Linden High School and went into the U.S. Army proudly serving his country from 1954 to 1956. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University in 1962 and the New Jersey College of Medicine in 1964. He served his medical internship at Walter Reed Army Hospital from 1964 to 1965.
He served his residency at St. Joseph's Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y., from 1965 to 1969 and had a general surgery practice in Port Jervis, N.Y., from 1969 to 2007, working with St. Francis Hospital, Mercy Community Hospital and Bon Secours Community Hospital.
He was the past president of the Orange County Medical Society, the Mid Hudson Surgical Society and the Upstate College of Surgeons. He was the past governor of the American College of Surgeons and was a member of St. Thomas R.C. Church, Hainesville.
A family statement read: "The greatest Country Surgeon" and friend to all.
Surviving are: his wife, Arlene Rahoche, at home; four sons, David M. Rahoche, of Sandyston, Nicholas T. Rahoche and his wife, Sharon, of Newton, James A. Rahoche, of Sandyston, and Thomas H. Rahoche and his wife, Erica, of Forked River; two brothers, Theodore Rahoche, of Sandyston, and Nicholas Rahoche and his wife, Fran, of Colonia; three grandchildren: Christopher, Sarah and John, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving son, John David "Chip" Rahoche, on Feb. 14, 1995.
Friends may call at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home, 100 E. Main St., Port Jervis, N.Y., on Wednesday, May 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Thursday, May 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at St. Thomas R.C. Church, 210 Route 206 North, Sandyston.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 23, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., in St. Thomas R.C. Church, with the Rev. Wayne Varga officiating. Burial with military honors will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Port Jervis, N.Y.
