SANDYSTON - John Frederick Hoverkamp, 71, of Sandyston, died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at home.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., Mr. Hoverkamp lived in Franklin prior to moving to Sandyston Township in 1989. He was in the United States Coast Guard from 1962-1963.
A New Jersey State Trooper, Mr. Hoverkamp worked in various stations in North Jersey serving as a S.W.A.T. team leader, was a member of the Underwater Recovery Team for New Jersey, and a member of the Bomb Disposal Team for New Jersey. He retired from the Netcong Barracks in 1986 after 20 years of service.
Following his retirement, Mr. Hoverkamp worked for A.E.T.C. as an Explosive Disposal Technician. He later started his own company, R.E.M.T.C. (Reactive Explosive Materials Training Corp.), developing special equipment to handle explosives with a concern for environmental protection. He, along with his wife, also operated a day care center in Sandyston Township for eight years, "Sandyston Day Care."
Mr. Hoverkamp was a member of St. Thomas R.C. Church in Sandyston and American Legion Post 157 in Branchville.
The son of the late George and Audrey (Morgan) Hoverkamp, Mr. Hoverkamp is survived by his wife, Annie (Donohoe) Hoverkamp; six children, Mark Hoverkamp, of Bushkill, Pa., Jeff Hoverkamp, of Sattley, Calif., Brendon Pi, of Belleville, Kevin Pi, of Glen Gardner, Steven Pi, of Sandyston, and Susan Hoverkamp Heater, of Hackettstown; and seven grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Audrey Wohl, of La Jolla, Calif.; two brothers, Peter Hoverkamp, of Winter Haven, Fla., and Captain Doug Hoverkamp, of Merritt Island, Fla; and two cousins, John Kuhrt, of Heath, Texas, and Bill Kuhrt, of Piscataway;
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, 11 a.m., at St. Thomas R.C. Church in Sandyston. Interment will follow in Frankford Plains Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main Street, Branchville, with an 8 p.m. American Legion service.
