John Joseph O'Rourke

SPARTA â€" John Joseph O’Rourke, 85, of Sparta, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, after a brief illness. John was born at home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Katherine (Dougherty) and Eugene O’Rourke.

Mr. O’Rourke was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Dorothy (Murphy) O’Rourke. He was the loving father to Laureen, Katherine (TJ) O’Leary, John (Kristin) O’Rourke, Deirdre (Rick) Metzger and Jeanne (Frank) Gorham; proud grandfather to Christopher (Erica) O’Rourke, Mary Kate and Brendan O’Leary, and Madeleine, Kaylee and Julia Gorham.

Mr. O’Rourke attended St. Patrick’s Elementary School, St. Michael’s High School and graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., in 1948.

During his career as a mechanical engineer, he was first employed by US Lines as a merchant marine and, once he came ashore, by Domino Sugar, The Museum of Modern Art and Warner Lambert. He retired from Warner Lambert in 1992.

He was an active member of Our Lady of the Lake Church, the USMMA Alumni Association, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a volunteer for Manna House for 20 years and was a master gardener.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 294 Sparta Ave., Sparta. Interment will follow at Sparta Cemetery.
