Joseph J. Matthews

FRANKLIN - Joseph J. Matthews, 71, of Franklin, died Friday, Aug. 23, 2013, at home.

Born in Caldwell, Mr. Matthews lived in Morris Plains, Long Valley, Port Murray and Frankford Township before moving to Franklin 22 years ago. He was a self-employed builder/contractor. Mr. Matthews was a former member and lieutenant of the Morris Township Minutemen First Aid Squad.

The son of the late Edwin H. and Eleanor (Kneiss) Matthews, Mr. Matthews also was predeceased by a granddaughter, Emily Prohn. He is survived by his companion of 22 years, Joan H. Underwood; three daughters, Joan Ibsen, of Lebanon Township, Tamera Brandt, of Bothell, Wash., and Melissa Dodd, of Meadowview, Va.; six grandchildren, Kailey and Ryan Ibsen, Cooper Brandt, Steven and Brian Jones and Michaelanne Dodd; one great-grandchild, Kaiden Jones; and one sister, Rose Marie Arendasky and her husband, John, of Frankford Township. He also is survived by and will be missed by his extended family and friends.

Services and interment are private and are under the direction of Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.
