Laura Jane Haitema Chartier

PIKEVILLE, N.C. -- Laura Jane (Eckerson) Haitema Chartier, 85, departed this life Tuesday, April 8, 2014, with the assurance of a heavenly home. Jane was a loving wife of 39 years of Milton Haitema, who predeceased her. She then wed Donald Chartier, with whom she shared nearly 10 years of travel and fun before he succumbed to cancer.

Jane was a tireless teacher who molded young minds and touched hundreds of lives through her nearly 30 years of service in the Newton school system. Upon retirement she moved to Lake Gaston in North Carolina with Milton to a home they built on the lake. There she and Milt and later Don became active members of the community supporting the efforts of the local volunteer fire department, the arts and especially Habitat for Humanity. She and her two spouses garnered several volunteer awards for their efforts.

Jane enjoyed travel and would often visit her children and grandchildren in California, Missouri and Wilson, N.C. She felt blessed that her eldest son, Tom, his wife, Margui, and their two children, Brenda and Ransom, lived close by and were able to visit with her often.

In addition to the Wilson, N.C., branch of the family, Jane is survived by her daughter, Martha, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and sons, Joshua and Nathaniel. She also leaves behind her son, David and his wife, Margaret, and their daughter, Katie, of Hayward, Calif.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Jane Chartier’s name to Habitat for Humanity in Warren County.
