Richard "Dick" F. O'Neill Sr.

SANDYSTON - Richard "Dick" F. O'Neill Sr., 72, of Layton, died Monday, March 4, 2013, at Morristown Medical Center.

Born in Eldred, N.Y., Mr. O'Neill was a longtime resident of Sussex County. He worked for Kolmar, powder production, in Port Jervis, N.Y., for 15 years, then worked for the Sandyston Road Department. He later worked for Hullco-Layton Garage, where he did auto restoration of antique cars, then worked as a school bus driver for the Sandyston-Walpack School District. Mr. O'Neill was currently employed as an auto claims appraiser for Selective Insurance in Branchville, where he has worked since 1984. A member of the Selective 25 Year Club, Mr. O'Neill also was a member and past district deputy of Elks Lodge 645, president of the Kittatinny Little League for several years, and a member of the Layton Cemetery Association. He loved NASCAR, racing, camping and Saturday night short track racing with his son.

The son of the late Francis ""Dutch"" and Lillian (Sutton) O'Neill, Mr. O'Neill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Bessie Jane (Raser) O'Neill; his son, Richard F. O'Neill Jr., of Montague; and many cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 8, at Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St., Branchville. Interment will follow in Layton Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 7, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with a 7:45 p.m. Elks service at the funeral home.
