NEWTON - Richard Joseph Connors, 83, of Newton, died Friday, April 4, 2014, at Newton Medical Center.
Born and raised in Tuxedo, N.Y., Mr. Connors was a longtime resident of Newton. He worked in the commissary at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover for 10 years. A United States Navy
veteran, Mr. Connors was a member of American Legion Post 86. He also was a member of the Newton First Aid Squad for 12 years and served as Cadet Squad Leader.
The son of the late Thomas and Abbie (Decker) Connors, Mr. Connors also was predeceased by his wife, Mary Lou Connors, on Nov. 3, 1991; a daughter, Mary Francis Connors; and a brother, John Connors. He is survived by one daughter, Denise Lorber and husband, Charles, of Newton; one granddaughter, Jaime Russo; and four great-grandchildren, Cheyenne Marie Russo, Stephen Joseph Russo, Savannah Rose Russo, and Wanda Faith Batchler. He also is survived by one sister, Mary Thompson, of New York state; one brother, Harold Connors and wife, Karen, of North Carolina; and his sister-in-law, Marie Connors, of Sandyston.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 11, at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, April 10, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with 8 p.m. American Legion services at the funeral home.
