Eddie Hazell Obituary

VERNON -- Jazz musician Eddie Hazell performed for five decades in clubs and concerts in the U.S. and Canada, and he was particularly well known in the New York area, playing in clubs ranging from MichaelÕs Pub and StrykerÕs in New York to the Newport Jazz Festival. He died Tuesday, Nov. 2, at age 76.

The singer-guitarist, who recorded his first album in 1961 at age 27, was familiar to jazz aficionados from his numerous albums and television appearances including the 'Merv Griffin Show,' 'AM New York,' the 'Today Show,' 'Kraft Music Hall' with Ed McMahon and 'Broadway Tonight.' His work also was popular in Japan.

Hazell, a native of New Jersey, grew up in the Little Falls area during jazzÕs golden age and began his music career while still in high school, with a band called the 3 Echoes. A stint in the Army during the Korean war sidetracked Hazell for a few years but he returned to music in the late 1950s and went on the road, playing clubs from Mr. KelleyÕs in Chicago to the Town Tavern in Toronto and The Tenement, The Happy Medium and The Most in Manhattan.

In the 1960s, he was headlining clubs with comedians Bill Cosby, in Chicago, and Rich Little, at the Four Seasons in New York and the Americana Hotel in Puerto Rico.

Writing in the New York Times in June 1975, critic John S. Wilson reported on HazellÕs trio at StrykerÕs Pub in New York: 'Nothing that Mr. Hazell chooses to do can be taken for granted, because his approaches are personal and imaginative and the guitar solos -- both chorded and single-stringed -- which are spread generously through his work, put an emphasis on a combination of both rhythm and melody that is rarely followed by jazz guitarists these days. What he achieves is an unusual mixture of superior supper club performance and bright, swinging, exciting jazz.'

Between gigs and recording much of the great American songbook on albums for various labels including Columbia and Audiophile ('Eddie Hazell Live At GulliverÕs,' 'Take Your Shoes Off Baby,' 'Eddie Hazell in Concert,' 'Eddie Hazell Live From The Embers' and more), he also did TV commercial work as a singer and performer for various products including Chase & Sanborn coffee.

'(Anyone) who is sensitive to the interplay of vocals and self-accompaniment would appreciate EddieÕs work. I think that the way Eddie Hazell matched his vocals with instrumentation, as his own accompanist on guitar, was outstanding. EddieÕs voice, his style, his phrasings and his choice of material demonstrated musical knowledge and a good taste,' nationally known radio jazz host Leigh Kamman told HazellÕs biographer Ed Petkus. He wrote 'Someone Out There Is Listening', which was published earlier this year by Hamilton Books.

Bob Daniels, a longtime reviewer for 'Variety' and a lifelong friend of HazellÕs, said: 'Eddie really knows how to improvise and possesses the musical skills and knowledge that work hand in hand with interpretive nuances. Above all he knows his instrument and brings good taste to his solo performances.' From the 1980s through to a few years ago, when Hazell stopped performing due to complications from ParkinsonÕs Disease, the Eddie Hazell Trio played concerts and clubs in the New York-New Jersey area with drummers Lou Slingerland and later Vinnie LeBue and with bassists Bernie Taylor and later Jim Hankins.

Hazell is survived by his wife, Anne Nielsen Hazell; his daughter, Naedine Hazell, editor of The Hartford Courant, and son-in-law Stan Godlewski; two sons, Edward Hazell, a computer VP of Information Systems, G & W Labs Inc., and daughter-in-law, Marytza, of Oak Ridge, and Kevin Hazell, tech coordinator for the Pompton Lakes schools and daughter-in-law, Sharon, of Glenwood; his stepdaughter, Maegann Struble and Floyd Struble and stepson Ned Meeder, all of Vernon, and stepdaughter Deborah Gallagher in Florida; and nine grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Naedine Thompson Hazell. Visiting hours are Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Eddie Hazell Jazz Foundation and mailed to the Lakeland Bank, c/o Denise, 529 Route 515, Suite 101,Vernon, NJ 07462.

Eddie was one of my father's desr friends, they went to high school together. My dad wrote the liner notes on many of Eddie's albums. Eddie was my first guitar teacher when I was 12. i wish he knew that I went onto become a semi professional musician, recording my own albums and doing session guitar work for bands. He was akind dear man.

As a musician I wonder what Ed Petkus, Eddie's biographer, would say about what other singing guitarists remind him of Eddie.

I met Eddie in the late 1950's when he was playing in a little club in Syracuse and we became friends. Young women threw themselves at him, but he never did more than smile back. Then I met Naedine and saw why! My grandson is a budding guitarist and just this Christmas I played several of Eddie's albums for him. Eddie was an honest-to-goodness original. Though we haven't seen each other in several years, I feel a hole in my life to know that he's gone. My deepest sympathies to Anne and Naedine, Eddie and Kevin. Bob Lauterborn

I'm really saddened to learn of Eddie's passing ... I was a student of his for a couple of years in the early 90's. I still play many of his arrangements and always think of him when doing so. He was very inspirational to me. I admired him greatly.

My deepest sympathies to his family.

My wife's son found the album we recorded back in the early 1960's when Eddie was playing at the Embers and gave it to me for Christmas. I had not seen it since then, went to the internet and found that Eddie had passed just a month ago. That album brought back fond memories and I had hoped to find him alive and well. So sorry to hear that he is no longer with us.
If I had not received that surprise Christmas gift that my wife's son had found amoung hundreds of old record albums, Eddie's "At The Embers", I never would have known.

God bless. The music business we all loved will miss another great contributor. The Embers had a fabulous 12 years from 1960-1973. We had all of the top jazz entertainers at our club during that period, from Mel Torme, Oscar Peterson, and all the ones who also played at Mr Kelly's in Chicago to Wayne Newton. On Christmas day, it brought back so many memories, ones we will never forget and Eddie was the only one who made an album there.

Dear Hazell Family, I learned how to play the guitar with uncle Eddie, i was not aware of his passing and recently learned from my mother Diane Hazell Carpenter; Eddie was her cousin, and my second cousin. I will always remember him most by his love of music and what he passed on to me. I still play today and will always remember fondly all my lessons with "uncle Eddie" as i will remember him forever!!!!!

I have one of Eddie's LPs, the one with "Mimosa", have been playing guitar and singing for some 40 years. Yeah, he had a great solo act ability if he needed to. Definitely an inspiration.

I had the pleasure of taking lessons from Eddie between 1999 and 2002- he was always the consummate professional and a stand up gentleman. I had the good fortune to do a duo date with him in Montclair and see him perform with his trio a good number of times. He was a one -of -a kind musician.

Eddie was my son's guitar teacher for many years in Pompton Plains..his legacy lives on everytime my son, now a dad, plays the guitar for his kids. He was the definitive gentleman and gentle man...a pleasure to listen to him play with his trio.

In the late 1960's he appeared in a piano bar I owned at that time named "Charlie Dicken's located in North Bergen, NJ. My sincere condolences to his family. He will be missed. George Fleck

To Ed's Family,

I remember Ed when he attended Passaic Valley High School and was head of the 4 Echos. They played the music for several of the school dances. I believe I submitted some photos of the group to the Little Falls Historical Society to be preserved.
