LAFAYETTE -- Alan Brown, 63, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011, at Compassionate Care Hospice Center in Dover. Born and raised in New Jersey, Alan grew up in Long Hill Township (formerly Millington), resided recently in Basking Ridge and then in Lafayette, where he had lived for the past three years.

Alan was a veracious reader, book collector, runner, avid hiker and lover of the great outdoors, having hiked the Grand Canyon many times. His passion for forestry kept him hard at work on the property he so loved in Lafayette. He also enjoyed entertaining his family and travelling. In addition, Alan had a long, successful, and happy career with the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, proudly earning many significant designations in the industry and mentoring the next generation of Chubbsociates.
Mr. Brown is survived by his loving wife, and partner, Barbara Seelig-Brown. The family includes his daughter, Shelby Brown of Cary, N.C.; a son, Ryan Brown of Richmond, Va.; stepsons, David Seelig of Birdsboro, Pa., and Adam Seelig of Annandale, N.J.; and two grandsons, Dominic and Alex Seelig.
He was the son of the late Robert and Lillian (Chester) Brown, along with his siblings, brother Gerald of Radford, Va., and sister Marion Brown of Richmond, Va.
A memorial service will be held for Alan on Friday at 5 p.m. at the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, 156 Main St. (Route 206 S.), Newton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
