VERNON - Donald R. Matthews Jr., 48, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013. Mr. Matthews, son of Donald R. and Mary (Finnegan) Matthews, was born in Bronx, N.Y., Sept. 1, 1965. He grew up at Greenwood Lake, N.Y., and had resided in Vernon for the past 23 years. Mr. Matthews worked for UPS for 20 years and was presently a supervisor/technician for NuCO2 of Sparta. He served with the United States Coast Guard from 1983 to 1987. For many years, he was a coach for Vernon youth sports. He was an avid skier and enjoyed working out at The Spa and Snap Fitness in Vernon. Mr. Matthews was predeceased by his father, Donald R. Matthews. He is survived by his wife, Diana (Schwiedereck) Matthews; children, Dylan and Demi Rae Matthews, at home; mother, Mary Matthews, of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; sister, Donna Melay, of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; mother-in-law, Barbara Schwiedereck-Istvan, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and his Venezuelan daughter, Eugenia Cristina Lopez Marvez. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m., at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church, 614 Route 517, Vernon. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Vernon.
