ROCKAWAY - Durand Murkland Smith, 87, passed away Monday, Oct. 21, 2013, at St. Clare's Hospital, Denville. He was born and raised and lived in Rockaway all of his life. Durand served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving in the European and the Pacific Theatres. He also participated in the D-Day invasion and the invasion of Okinawa. Following the war he worked as a stationary plant engineer for R.C.A. Records in Rockaway until his retirement. Durand was predeceased by his wife, the late Audrey Shafer, who died in March 1997; his parents, Preston and Gladys Smith; his three brothers, Sherwyn, Leland and Kenyon; and his sister, Glenda Bidgood. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Jeffrey and Karen Smith, of Point Pleasant, and Kelly and Ariel Macalalad, of Oxford; his beloved grandchildren, Timothy Smith, Heather (Robert) Coon, Devin Macalalad, Kacey Macalalad and Connor Macalalad; as well as his four sisters, Marilyn McPeak, of Hackettstown, June Stephens, of Flanders, Dianne Johansson, of Bangor, Pa., and Gyl Fela, of Susquehanna, Pa. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at the Norman Dean Home for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville.
