POMPTON LAKES - Fred Aug, 79, a longtime resident of Pompton Lakes, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains. Fred was born in 1931 in Glen Ridge and grew up in Hanover and Wayne. He graduated from Pompton Lakes High School in 1949, where he was an all-state athlete in multiple sports. Fred served in the Air Force and Army during the Korean War. He also played minor league baseball with the Chicago Cubs Organization. He completed a bachelor's degree in education from William Paterson College and a master's degree in education from New York University. He served as a teacher and head basketball coach for more than 30 years in the Pompton Lakes, North Warren and Vernon Township School Districts. Fred was a longtime advocate for the teaching profession, serving in a variety of leadership positions with the New Jersey Education Association as both an active and retired teacher. He was predeceased by his wife, Judy, and is survived by his daughters, Joyce Brensinger and Jodi Ossi of Highland Lakes; his son, Robert Aug of Monmouth Junction; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.
