WINDHAM, MAINE - John A. Devine, D.O., 56, died Nov. 16, 2013, in Windham, Maine.

John was born in New York City on Dec. 8, 1956, the son of Joseph M. and Margaret (McDermott) Devine. He graduated from Pope John XXII Regional High School in Sparta in 1974, received his Bachelor of Science in medical biology from the University of New England, magna cum laude, in 1979, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1983.

Over the years, John practiced at multiple hospitals in a few different states. He served his residency from 1983-85 at the Northwest General Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis.; from 1992-94 he was at the River Valley Medical Center in Spring Green, Wis.; for a year he worked as a locum tenens for Weatherby Healthcare; 2000-01 he saw patients at the Concentra Medical Center in New Berlin, Wis.; 2001-03 he again worked as a locum tenens for Weatherby Healthcare; 2003-07 he was the clinical medical director of Occupational Medicine for U.S. Healthworks Medical Group in Scarborough, Maine; from 2007-09 he was the medical director, Occupational Health Service, at Elliott Health Systems in Manchester, N.H.; and from 2011-2013 he held a staff position at Goodall Hospital in Stanford, Maine, as an occupational health physician. John was a diplomat for the National Board of Examiners of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, and also was a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, the Maine Osteopathic Association, and the American Osteopathic College of Occupational and Preventive Medicine.

John was a dedicated father, who was devoted to his family, and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed gourmet cooking and feeding his family and friends. He also was an avid collector of memorabilia.

In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his son, Michael, and wife, Karen in 2009. He is survived by his significant other, Mary Smith, of Springvale, Maine; brother, Joseph Devine and wife, Carol, of East Stroudsburg, Pa.; three sisters, Dorothy Devine, of Newton, Patricia D'Amico and husband, Larry, of Randolph, and Margaret Rosanelli and husband, William, of Montague; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Dolby Funeral Chapel, 434 River Road, Windham, Maine. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, at the chapel, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 919 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, Maine. Burial will be at a later date at the Smith Cemetery, Windham, Maine.
