Obituary Condolences

MONTAGUE - Joseph V. Cali, 79, of Montague, passed away Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013, at Newton Medical Center, Newton.

Joe Cali's career in the arts began as a member of the Coenties Slip Artists, a group of mostly painters on the lower east side of Manhattan who had a major influence on American painting in the 1950s. He went on to have a long, successful career in architecture with his New York firm, Joseph V. Cali Associates, and pursued a life-long interest in photography as well as painting. In recent years, he became devoted to an interest in the making of fountain pens. His one-of-a-kind writing instruments are highly sought after and have been acquired by collectors all over the world.

The son of the late Louis and Mary (Morana) Cali, he was born May 3, 1934, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was married to Ann (Piscopo) Cali and predeceased by his first wife, Emilia (Grassia) Cali.

Survivors include his wife and her two sons, Louis and Mark Ponterio; his son, Paul Cali, of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sisters, Dorothy Cali and Lorraine Cali Vasquez, both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and nephew, Andrew Vasquez and his wife, Lisa.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Port Jervis, N.Y., Saturday, Sept. 7, with the Rev. George Hafemann officiating. Cremation will be private at the convenience of the family.

Donations may be made to Catholic Charities of Orange County, New York, 224 Main St., Goshen, N.Y. 10924. Arrangements by Stroyan Funeral Home, 405 West Harford St., Milford, Pa.
