LAKEWOOD - Laura Marie Ahern (Novello), 82, of Lakewood, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at the Ocean Medical Center in Brick.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 17, 1931, Laura was the daughter of the late Frank and Margaret Novello. Laura was a former resident of Flushing, N.Y., Hicksville, N.Y., and Vernon, before retiring to Lakewood in 1994. She served as a secretary for the Robert F. Wagner Jr. mayoral administration in New York, N.Y., before becoming a devoted homemaker, mother and wife. She later served as a teacher's aide for the Vernon Township School System before retiring in 1994.

Golf, gardening, going to the theatre, line dancing and cheering for the N.Y. Mets and Jets were all favorite pastimes for Laura. She also was known for her project "Laura's Great Idea," which involved knitting lap quilts for returning military servicemen from war abroad.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, James R. Ahern; her loving children, Debbie Behagg, Jim W. Ahern and his wife, Jeannine, Steve Ahern, LaurieAnn Baldassare and her husband, Joe, and Diane Hudack and her husband, Rich; her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer, Donald, Heather, Rachel, Stephen, Michelle, Jackson, Kelly, Nicole and Madison; a dear brother, John Novello and his wife, Dolores; special sister-in-law, Ginny Ahern; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood. Her funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at St. Justin's Church, 975 Fischer Blvd., Toms River. Interment will follow in the BG William C. Doyle N.J. Veterans Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Road, Wrightstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 1806, Toms River, NJ 08754.
