ANDOVER - Peter M. Karl, 77, of Andover Township, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, surrounded by his loving family. Peter was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Friday the 13th of March 1936 and lived most of his adult life in Sussex County. He was a proud member of the U.S. Army and of the Knights of Columbus, Council 588, Sparta. Peter played semi-pro football for the Franklin Miners in the 1950s, coached football at Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta in the early '70s, and was a NJSIAA and ECAC football official. He was involved as a coach and official in the Sparta Little League, and was a member of the PTA at Rev. Brown and the Sparta Ambulance Squad. Peter was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gwen Langenfeld Karl, and his beloved infant granddaughter, Emerson Lily Karl-Gruswitz. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Deborah Reidmiller (Robert), of Andover, Karen Town (Robert), of St. Augustine, Fla., Mary Karl-Gruswitz (Abe), of Andover, Stephanie Fink (David), of South Riding, Va., and Meredith Hodgkiss, of Chatham; and grandchildren, Michael and Kathleen Reidmiller, Shannon, R.J., Peter, Kyle and Preston Town, Noah, Beatrice and Winter Karl-Gruswitz, and Jacob and Caleb Fink. Peter also is survived by his sister-in-law, Patricia Karl; nephew, Tim Karl; niece, Kathleen McCann; and many, many friends. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 294 Sparta Ave., Sparta. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Franklin.
