FREDON - Richard J. Gouger, 67, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Newton Medical Center following a long illness. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Richard grew up in Blairstown and Newton and had resided in Fredon for the past 31 years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather and was a hard worker who held his family in the highest regard. A 1964 graduate of Newton High School, Richard enlisted in the United States Army where he served for four years. He enjoyed 39 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Dianne, and was the proud father of five and grandfather of four. Richard had been employed as a truck driver for the past 46 years, with his most recent employment at Colonial Concrete in Newark for the past 11 years. An avid coin collector, he enjoyed watching old movies, making home improvements, celebrating the holidays and volunteer coaching for youth basketball leagues. The son of the late Wallace and Genevieve Gouger, Richard is survived by his wife, Dianne Gouger; five children, Faith Pedersen and her husband, Michael, of Byram Township, Holly Capozzoli and her husband, Jason, of Stillwater, Richard Gouger Jr., of Weehawken, Jensen Gouger, of Andover, and Melody Gouger, of Fredon; two grandsons, Michael and Hunter; two granddaughters, Lily and Anneka; and one sister, Janet Lockwood, of Hudson, Fla. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton. A prayer service will follow at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
