TOMS RIVER - Richard "Dick" P. Roos passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, May 1, 2015, after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
The son of the late Anthony C. and Margaret R. (Flanagan) Roos, he was born in Newark on March 30, 1935. He grew up in Orange and Budd Lake.
Dick moved to Hopatcong after he got married, and then to Sparta before retiring to Toms River. He was a CPA at Sussex County for 25 years before relocating his practice to Toms River 20 years ago. He taught accounting at Upsala College. Dick was an active Scout, an avid sailor, and he took up woodworking in retirement. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4969, and a Past Faithful Navigator for the 4th degree of the John D. McMahon Assembly, Toms River.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Elaine Roos (Johnbroer); a son, Peter, and Kathleen Roos, of Pompton Lakes; a daughter, Peg, and Tim Finkle, of Williston, Vt.; a daughter, Jennifer, and Pete Appaluccio, of Sparta; six grandchildren, Ian Roos, Mia Finkle, Madeline Roos, AJ Appaluccio, Shawn Conklin and Travis Conklin; a sister, Carol Hughes; a brother, Robert, and Joyce Roos; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald Roos and Martin Hughes; a sister-in-law, Patricia Roos; a sister-in-law, Rosalie Hughes; and his stepmother, Florence Roos.
A memorial service will be held on June 20, 11 a.m. at St. Joseph R.C. Church, Toms River. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or any charity of your choice.
