HAMPTON - Richard William Clayton Sr. died peacefully at home on Monday, July 7, 2014, under the care of the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice. Born in Livingston, Richard had resided in Hampton for many years. Son of the late William Arthur and Dorothy (Meier) Clayton, Richard had served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Mediterranean. He was a proud retiree of the N.J. State Police and was a detective for the Warren County Prosecutor's office. A founding charter member of the N.J. Chapter IX Blue Knights, he enjoyed many hours in his lifetime on his beloved Harley Davidson motorcycles. Richard served as a volunteer for the Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice as a patient family volunteer and supported all charitable events - most notably the Annual Dales Chilly Chili Ride. A kind and gentle giant of a man, he gave generously to so many and will be missed tremendously. Beloved husband of Cecelia Clayton, he also is survived by his children Richard, Lisa and her husband, Kurt Stromp. Also surviving are his grandchildren Lindsay, Nicholas and Abigail Clayton, and Julianne Bursee, as well as the mother of his children, Estelle and her husband, Carl Lehmkuhl; his stepchildren Charlene and her husband, Thomas Molnar, Daniel Perciballi and Jessica Perciballi, his step-grandchildren Evan, Sean and Aidan Molnar; his sister, Judy Delapenha; his niece, Terry Stella; his cousin, Elaine and her husband, Orie Corino; and his daughter-in-law, Erin Clayton. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, July 11, at 10:30 a.m. in the Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church, Branchville. Visitation will be held Thursday, July 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home, 156 Main St. (Route 206), Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Richard's name will be gratefully accepted by the Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement Center, 99 Sparta Ave., Newton, NJ 07860.
