SPARTA - Roland Alexander Roe, 87, of Sparta, died Sunday, June 8, 2014.

Born in East Orange, Roland lived in Butler before moving to Sparta in 1973. He was a 1953 graduate of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and was a proud member of the United States Army.

Roland worked for many years at Hoffman LaRoche in Nutley before working as a chemical engineer at Fluerchem Inc., in Middletown, N.Y. He loved his family, work and Newfoundland, where he traveled to every year.

Roland is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Madeline Promin Roe, and was the devoted father of Roberta Roe-Riedel, Patricia Roe, Roland Roe Jr., and Thomas Roe. He also is survived by eight loving grandchildren and three beloved great-grandchildren.

Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Goble Funeral Home, 22 Main St., Sparta. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Roland's memory to the .
