Stephen D. Gurnis Obituary
VERNON - Stephen D. Gurnis, 62, died unexpectedly at St. Clare's Hospital, Sussex, on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013. Born to Stephen D. and Helen Gurnis, he was the second generation of his family born of Polish immigrants in the United States.

Steve graduated from SUNY Stony Brook in 1974 with a Bachelor or Science in electrical engineering. He worked for Bendix Corporation and subsequently retired from Honeywell International when it relocated. In June 1989, he married Karen and they moved to Vernon. Their son, Michael, is a graduate of St. John's University.

Steve's passion was his family. He enjoyed being a grandfather. His passions included playing his guitars, taking care of his home and in recent years being an advocate for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society by riding his bicycle with Team-In-Training. He biked many miles to raise funds for research after being inspired by his cousin, Billy Dudjoc. He was looking forward to again riding at Lake Tahoe in 2014 to that end.

Steve was predeceased by his mother, Helen, in 1979, and his father, Stephen Gurnis, in 2012. Steve is survived by his wife, Karen, and son, Michael, both of Vernon; sister, Jeanne P. Gurnis, of Hartsdale, N.Y.; and cousin of Helen Deverin, of Northampton, Pa. He will be missed by his cairn terrier, Fergis.

Funeral arrangements by Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home, 241 Route 94, Vernon, will be private.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 14 Commerce Drive, Suite 301, Cranford, NJ 07016, http://pages.teamintraining.org/nj/ambbr14/sgurnis would be appreciated. Information and condolences can be found at www.fergusonvernonfuneralhome.com.
