SPARTA - Joyce S. Heathwood, 86, formerly of Sparta, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Newton Medical Center. She died peacefully with family at her side. The daughter of the late Dr. Herbert Spaulding and Emma Spaulding (Hall), Joyce grew up in Erie, Pa., and received her Bachelor of Arts from Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. Joyce was a longtime substitute teacher in the Sparta schools and later sales manager for Hart and Iliff Fuel Co., in Newton. Joyce was the widow of the late William J. Heathwood and is survived by her five children, Elizabeth Heathwood, of Fredon, William, of Dover, Richard and his wife, Deborah, of Westtown, N.Y., Thomson and his wife, Dorothy, of Lafayette, and Victoria Hadden, of Weston, Mass.; and by her six grandchildren, Leann and Clint Heathwood, Paige Heathwood and Alex, Payne and Maclean Hadden. She also is survived by her two sisters, Diana Crants, of Billings, Mont., and Elizabeth Bennett, of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. A memorial gathering will be planned for a later date.
