HAMPTON - Marie J. Mack, 73, of Hampton Township, died Sunday, May 4, 2014, at home.

Born in Newton, Mrs. Mack was a longtime resident of Sussex County and a 1958 graduate of Newton High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Robert Mack. Her husband and children were her life. She was a homemaker while her children were young along with a school bus driver for many years. She also cared for her grandchildren and many others who became her grandchildren of her heart. She was mom, grandma (mom-mom), sister, Aunt Marie, cousin and friend to many. With her youngest grandchild in school, at the age of 66, she started working for Clear Messaging Answering Service, where she worked full-time until she became ill in 2012.

The daughter of the late Austin and Ella (Lott) Layton, she also was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Mack Sr. (May 16, 1994). Mrs. Mack is survived by five children, Robert L. Mack Jr. and wife, Donna, of Sandyston Township, Austin Mack, of Hampton Township, Sherri Pittenger, of Hampton Township, Harry Mack and wife, Karen Monroe, of the Middleville Section of Stillwater Township, and Shawn Mack and wife, Christine Casazza, of Hampton Township; grandchildren, Robert III and wife, Amanda Mack, Breanna Pittenger, Ricky Pittenger, Jeanie-Marie and husband, Ivan Sales, and Nichole Mack; six great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Caton and husband, Robert, of Andover Township; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linda Bennett and husband, Frank, Marilyn Barlip and husband, Tom, LeAnn Kays and husband, Hugh, the late Fred Mack, and David Mack and wife, Kay. Mrs. Mack also is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Newton Cemetery 10 a.m. Saturday, May 24. Memorial visitation will follow from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Swartswood Firehouse, 931 Swartswood Road, Swartswood. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.
