KINGSTON, Pa. - David Joseph Roberts, 81, of Kingston, Pa., died Monday, July 7, 2014, at Commonwealth Hospice Inpatient Unit at Regional Hospital, Scranton, Pa., following a brief illness.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late Andrew William and Margaret Barnhart Roberts. He was a graduate of Dallas High School, Dallas, Pa. Dave served his country as a radio operator in the Army from 1951 to 1953.

All of his life, Dave was a hard worker, a creative inventor and a problem solver. He resided in Hamburg from 1969 until 1997, and lived in Kingston, Pa., from 1997 until recently when he became a resident of the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center in Scranton, Pa.

Preceding him in death in 2009, in addition to his parents, was his wife of 52 years, the former Joan Ann Bonner, who was the love of his life. Also preceding him were sisters, Margaret Hadsall, Leona Williams and Rose Marie Roberts and brothers William, LeRoy, Arthur and Jack Roberts.

Surviving are sons David Joseph Roberts II (Lisa Castro) of Philadelphia, Pa., and Andrew William Roberts (Amy Roberts) of Sparta; daughter, Dr. Andrea Roberts, of Middletown, Conn.; sister, Evelyn Schulz, of Dallas, Pa.; and 26 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, July 12, from the Harold C. Snowdon Funeral Home Inc., 140 N. Main St., Shavertown, Pa. The Rev. Judy L. Walker will officiate. Interment with military honors will be held in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas, Pa. Friends may call Saturday morning from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Gino J. Merli Veterans' Center, the Commonwealth Hospice Inpatient Unit at Regional Hospital and all those who cared for Dave in the final years of his life.

One of Dave and Joan's favorite pastimes was visiting the exhibits and riding the trains at Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Locomotive Restoration Fund, Lackawanna and Wyoming valley Railway Historic Society Inc., P.O. Box 3452, Scranton, PA 18505-0542.
