FRANKFORD - Carol Lantz Valerio, 90, of Frankford Township, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Newton Medical Center.

Born in West Hoboken, Carol grew up in Teaneck, and then returned in 1950 to Sussex County where her family originated and continued to reside in Frankford Township for the balance of her life. A homemaker during her married life and widowed at the age of 59, she returned to work as the treasurer of Frankford Township and later as a sales representative for Wolfe Granite Memorials in Sussex.

Active in civic and community volunteerism all her life, Carol was dedicated to the preservation of the historic Frankford Plains Cemetery where generations of her family are interred. She served for 35 years as a trustee and secretary/treasurer for that non-profit organization. Carol's tenacious spirit and strong values inspired her family and those who knew her.

Carol was the daughter of the late Morton D. and Mabel (Stockfish) Lantz. She also was predeceased by her husband, A. Leonard Valerio, in 1982; by their infant son, Richard Paul Valerio, in 1951; and by her sister, Jean Dickinson, in 2000. She is survived by two daughters, Ellen V. Karnas and husband, Donald, of Thomasville, Pa., and Barbara V. Fuchs and husband, Philip, of Chatham; one son, Paul L. Valerio and wife, Sherri Talbot Valerio, of Frankford Township; three grandchildren, Timothy Karnas and wife, Brooke, Larissa Mehlfelder and husband, Christopher, and Nicholas Valerio; and one great-grandchild, Erin Karnas.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton. Interment will follow in Frankford Plains Cemetery, 100 Plains Road, Frankford Township. Visitation will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 25, at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Frankford Plains Cemetery Association, 13 David Drive, Augusta, NJ 07822; or to Father John's Animal House, 50 Father John's Lane, Lafayette, NJ 07848. Online condolences may be offered at www.smithmccrackenfuneralhome.com.
