NEWTON - Phyllis Barbara (Applegate) Foley, 91, of Newton, passed away peacefully at the Harris Health Care Center at Bristol Glen on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014.

Born in Orange to Stanley Everitt and Lillian (Watson) Applegate, Phyllis grew up in Montclair and graduated from Montclair High School before moving to Livingston in 1947. She had been a resident of Newton since 2007.
Phyllis was a veteran of the United States Navy, stationed at Brooklyn Naval Hospital and St. Albans Naval Hospital, N.Y., as pharmacist mate, 2nd class in 1943 and 1944.
A school secretary at Harrison and Hillside Schools in Livingston for 24 years, Phyllis retired in 1986. She was a member of the Livingston Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as a deacon for many years. She served on the Spiritual Life Committee at Bristol Glen and was an active member of the Veterans Group at Bristol Glen. Phyllis enjoyed reading, gardening, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, vacations on Long Beach Island and spending time with her family.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband of almost 54 years, Eugene B. Foley Sr., in 1998, and by her sisters, Joyce Klaber, of Livingston, and Lillian Irene Castle, of Fullerton, Calif.
Phyllis is survived by her brother, Stanley Applegate, of Dalton, Ga.; and her four children, Eugene Foley and his partner, Linn Parziale, of Woburn, Mass., Richard Foley, of Centennial, Colo., Judith and Mark Hallock, of Frankford Township, and Stuart and Anne Foley, of Turku, Finland. She was blessed to have five surviving grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Yarbrough, Amber and Sam Correll, Robert and Monica McCann, Sean Foley and Fiona Foley; along with five surviving great-grandchildren, Blake Yarbrough, Jackson Correll, Lillian Correll, Khai McCann and Leonardo McCann. Her survivors also include her extended family, Joseph and Catherine Hill, Jennifer Sousa, Heather and Chris Morris and Jessica Blaine, along with their children, Madeleine Yarbrough, Jack Yarbrough, Christopher Morris and Morgan Blaine. Phyllis is also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Chapel at Bristol Glen, 200 Bristol Glen Drive, Newton. Visitation will be held Saturday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., at Bristol Glen.
