VERNON - David S. Mertens, 79, died peacefully at his residence on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. Born in Bayonne, he was the son of the late Frederic T. and Margaret (Sedgwick) Mertens. David had been a resident of Vernon for many years and prior to that had resided in Rutherford. He was a proud veteran serving his country with the United States Army. He was an insurance adjuster working for the Liberty Mutual insurance company in Saddle Brook. David was an avid supporter of the Appalachian Trail and he helped to establish the hostel at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Vernon. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife, Millie Murphy-Mertens. He is survived by his sons, Daniel S. Mertens of Rutherford and Frederic R. Mertens of Yaphank, N.Y.; a brother, Robert Mertens, of Springfield, Va.; and four grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 307 Route 94, Vernon, NJ 07462.
