SPARTA - Joseph B. Tripi, 88, of Sparta, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, in Compassionate Care Hospice at St. Clare's Hospital in Dover. Born in St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Tripi lived in Uniondale, N.Y., before moving to Sparta 34 years ago. An Army Air Corps veteran, Mr. Tripi served as commander of B-17 aircraft during World War II. A captain for American Airlines, Mr. Tripi retired Feb. 16, 1984. While at American Airlines, he flew Military Airlift Command charter operations during the Vietnam era. He was a member of the Grey Eagles, Our Lady of the Lake in Sparta and a member of the Knights of Columbus Marquette Council. The son of the late Charles L. and Clara (Bowman) Tripi, Mr. Tripi is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary F. (Kinsella) Tripi, of Sparta; five children, Mary Ellen Curry, of Las Vegas, Nev., Charles K. Tripi, of Sparta, Debra M. Tripi, of Sparta, Mark Tripi, of Miller Place, N.Y., and Cynthia Tripi, of Olney, Md.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
