OXFORD, Pa. - Rose J. (Smart) Sauer, 82, formerly of Newton, passed away Dec. 2, 2012, with her family by her side, following a long, hard-fought battle with Alzheimer's. Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Rose leaves her children, Bruce, Donna and Dennis; daughters-in-law, Gerri and Becky; and the lights of her life, grandchildren Patrick, Kyra and Sam and great-grandson, Kane, to cherish her memories. Rose was born in 1930 in New York City to the late Henry and Elvira (Mifsud) Smart. She also was predeceased by her two brothers, Henry and Michael, and her loving husband, Patrick, who passed in 1970. Rose was a vibrant and active woman, pursuing a wide range of interests that were a tribute to her drive and multitude of talents. In the '50s, she worked on Wall Street at Bankers Trust, and later in life enjoyed serving lunches at Pope John XXIII High School. Her strong sense of service also led her to volunteer for many years at Newton Memorial Hospital. But, without a doubt, Rose's most fulfilling job in life was caring for and raising her family. As a wife, mother and grandmother, she brought a special joy to our lives and will be deeply missed. A memorial Mass, as well as a celebration of her life, will be planned at a later date. In the meantime, we remind those that knew her that Mom's greatest joy in life was cooking and sharing a meal. For her, love was often best expressed with food, and over the years, both her family and countless strangers were blessed to receive this gift. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation of food or time to your local food pantry or soup kitchen. We know she would be quite happy in the knowledge that her memory was serving to feed and care for those most in need.
