HACKETTSTOWN - Robert A. Hammell, 84, of Hackettstown, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at home. Robert was born May 1, 1928, in Sparta. He is the son of the late Harold P. and Marian (Foulds) Hammell.

He served in the United States Navy in World War II. He was the owner/operator of Bob's Auto Electric in Hackettstown for 50 years.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Carol (Carpenter) Hammell, at home; son, Timothy David Hammell, of Chatham, Va.; daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Stephen Zenes, of Matthews, N.C.; daughter, Janice Hammell,

of Hackettstown; daughter, Barbara, and her husband, William Roberts, of Hackettstown; stepson and wife, James and Karen Messler, of Pocono Lake, Pa.; stepson, Edward Messler, of Hackettstown; brother, Ed Hammell, and his wife, Vera,

of Hampton; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Robert Hammell Jr.; and a stepson, Michael Messler.

Robert lived in Hackettstown for 50 years. He was a founding member and former Exhaulted Ruler of the Hackettstown Elks Club; member of the Hackettstown Town Council; started the recycling program in Hackettstown in the late 1980s; member of the Economic & Environmental Control Board; member of the Planning Board; member of the Musconetcong Lodge F&AM No. 42, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree, Budd Lake; member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; and a member of the Warren County Vo-Tech school board for 16 years. Robert was an avid weather enthusiast and was a member of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network; he was a member of the American Legion Blue Ridge Post 164, Hackettstown; and a member of the Warren County Pollution Control Finance Authority. He loved to travel, and traveled with his wife extensively out west and through the Rockies.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St., Hackettstown. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the funeral home. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m.
