LAFAYETTE - Howard Augustus Nebel, 94, of Lafayette, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Paramus, Mr. Nebel was a 1935 graduate of Hackensack High School and was a graduate of Bergen Junior College. He lived in Paramus until moving to Sussex County in 1985. A World War II Navy veteran, Mr. Nebel was a New Jersey State Trooper, retiring in 1970 after 20 years of service. He was a member of the New Jersey State Trooper's Association and was a retired secretary for the association. Mr. Nebel was a member of the Agricultural Society in Sussex County. He raised sheep and llamas; he sheared their wool, from which he made various articles of clothing. He also raised honey bees and made honey and grew peanuts and made peanut butter. In addition, Mr. Nebel grew azaleas and sunflowers. The son of the late Carl J. and Ida Marie (DeVuyst) Nebel, Mr. Nebel is survived by his wife, Patricia (Baron) Nebel; four children, Gregg Nebel of Poulsbo, Wash., Lissa Mazzawi of Gouldsboro, Pa.; Marinanci Post of Wantage and Ward Nebel of Montague; and nine grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 4-24 Beaver Run Road, Hamburg. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton.
