SPARTA - James J. Matowik, 81, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 1, 2013, at his residence. James was born in New York City and had been a resident of Sparta since 1955. He was a 1949 graduate of Blairstown High School in Blairstown and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He worked as a computer programmer for Bell Laboratories in Whippany for 30 years, retiring in 1984. James was a lover of classical music, he was an avid chess player and loved painting and gardening. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Charlotte (Page) Matowik. James is the devoted father of Deena Matowik of Boston; Ellen Matowik Russell and her husband, Peter, of New York City; James Matowik Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Ogdensburg; and Steven Matowik and his wife, Karen, of Yuma, Ariz. He also is survived by his brother, John C. Matowik, of Lady Lake, Fla; and beloved grandchildren, Avery and Jacob.
