VENICE, Fla. - Ronald James "Jim" Childs, 80, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Sparta, N.J., died Feb. 15, 2013, in Venice, Fla.

He was born in Toronto, Canada, on Aug. 7, 1932. He served as a pilot in the RCAF. After leaving the service, Jim was a pilot for United Airlines, retiring in 1992.

Jim enjoyed volunteering for Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. He also enjoyed biking, boating and flying. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his wife, Irene, of Venice; son, Steven Childs (Jean), of Marietta, Ga.; daughter, Marilyn Rhude, of Sandwich, Mass.; stepchildren, Barbara Fox (Russell), of Mooresville, N.C., and Kathleen Gianniti, of Milford, Conn.; grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ryan, Paul James, Christopher and Lauren; and brother, Edward Childs (Leslie), of Amherst, Nova Scotia. Jim is predeceased by his first wife, Margaret.

A memorial gathering will be held at Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel, on Sunday, March 3. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m.; service at 3 p.m.
