NEWTON - Michael J. Ulichny, 87, of Newton, died Monday, April 15, 2013, at home. Born in Brockton, Pa., Mr. Ulichny lived in Newark before moving to Newton more than 50 years ago. He was a World War II Navy veteran where he was a 2nd class Radarman on the USS Reuben James Destroyer Escort. Mr. Ulichny graduated from Seton Hall University in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in management and a teaching certificate; he was on the dean's list. Mr. Ulichny retired from Jefferson Township Board of Education after 32 years, where he was a grammar school teacher. He previously taught grammar school in Stillwater Township. Mr. Ulichny was a member of St. Joseph R. C. Church and a former Scout leader with Pack 94 in Newton. The son of the late Andrew and Mary (Eistock) Ulyicsni, Mr. Ulichny was predeceased by his wife, Mildred J., on Sept. 30, 2004. He also was predeceased by three brothers, Andrew, George and Adam Ulichny; three sisters, Veronica Gould, Helen Kindler and Anna Kessler. Mr. Ulichny is survived by two sons, Michael S. Ulichny, of Bangor, Pa., and Jamie E. Ulichny, of Newton; three grandchildren, Michael John Ulichny, Alexandra K. Ulichny and Jerome John Ulichny; one brother, John Ulichny, of Roselle; and one sister, Mary Papa, of Lake Hopatcong. Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 22, at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Newton. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., and Monday morning 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
