HAMBURG - Jerry Fernandez, 84, passed away Sunday, Aug. 25, 2013, at Morristown Medical Center. Born in Naples, Italy, he moved to this country at a young age and became a United States citizen. Jerry had been a resident of Hamburg since 1995 and prior to that had resided in Wantage and Hawthorne. For 40 years Mr. Fernandez worked as an iron worker and had worked for Ferdinand's Old Forge Inc. in Paterson. While working with iron he discovered he had a talent and interest in sculpting various items out of iron and took great pride in giving those items to his family and friends. Jerry also was an avid hunter, and he enjoyed making his homemade wine. He was predeceased in February 2013 by his beloved wife of 62 years, Angelina Fernandez. He is survived by his daughter, Martha Preston, of Glenwood; a son, Robert Fernandez and his wife, Elizabeth, of Kannapolis, N.C.; grandchildren, Dana Lorenzo, Daniella Louise Preston and Theresa Hogan; great-grandchildren, Kaela, Alexis and Isiah; his two sisters still living in Italy; along with several nieces and nephews; and a former daughter in-law, Gloria Caramico, of Wharton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home 241 Route 94, Vernon (for GPS use the address of 1 Vanderhoof Court Vernon). Visitation will be held at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service. Crypt side prayers will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, at Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum in Paterson (meeting directly at the mausoleum).
