WANTAGE - David R. Jones, 78, surrounded by his loving family, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Jones, son of the late Joseph and Audrey (Pugh) Jones, both from Wales, was born in Taylor, Pa., Jan. 16, 1935. He grew up in Morris Township and resided in Dover before moving to the Beemerville section of Wantage in 1956.

Mr. Jones worked for Jersey Central Power and Light for 42 years, retiring in 1996. From 1954 to 1986 he worked as a lineman out of both the Franklin and Newton Offices and then over the next 10 years worked as a supervisor and then Trouble Department supervisor at the Morristown Office.

Mr. Jones served with the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1952-1958 during the Korean War. He later served active duty with the U.S. Army from 1958-1960 in the Signal Corps stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.

A member of the Beemerville Rod and Gun Club, Mr. Jones was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed surf fishing the beaches on Long Beach Island and duck hunting with his dog, "Smokey." He also was a former member of the Beemerville Fire Department and the Sussex Elks Lodge.

Mr. Jones was an active member of the Sparta United Methodist Church and was involved in many missions and was a recipient of the Special Mission Recognition Award from the United Methodist Women in 2010. He was a volunteer for Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice for 11 years.

Mr. Jones is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean C. (Beemer) Jones; daughters, Kathy Gelston and her husband, Gary, of Branchville, Kimberly Green and her husband, James, of Sandyston, and Karen Van der Groef and her husband, Neal, of Wantage; brother, Robert Jones, of Swartswood; grandchildren, Kirk and Hollie Gelston, Steven Green and his wife, Janessa, Kevin Green and his wife, Alison, Jenna Sebring and her husband, Seth, Dustin Van der Groef and his wife, Rebecca, and Kelsey Van der Groef; as well as three great-grandchildren, Hudsyn, Clayton and Adrielle.

Mr. Jones was a hard worker and a good provider for his family. He was extremely proud of his three daughters and especially proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at Sparta United Methodist Church, 71 Sparta Ave., Sparta. Interment will follow at Beemerville Cemetery, Wantage Township. Friends may call at the Ferguson Funeral Home, 27 Third St., Sussex, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24.
