NEWTON - Joan B. Havens, 85, of Newton, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Barn Hill Care Center. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs. Havens was a longtime resident of Newton. She was a graduate of Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y. Mrs. Havens was a homemaker; she helped her late husband, Martin C., who was the owner/operator of Havens Poultry Farm in Newton. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newton; she enjoyed spending time at Fairview Lake, reading newspapers and doing crossword puzzles. The daughter of the late Louis P. and Anna L (Pierson) Benz, Mrs. Havens was predeceased by her husband, Martin C., July 11, 2008. She is survived by two sons, Paul M. Havens and wife, Debbie, of Fredon, and Alan C. Havens and wife, Luz Marina, of Newton; one grandson, Trevor Martin Havens; and two step-grandchildren, Dustin and Stephanie Klusmann. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, Dec. 17, at Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, 63 High St., Newton. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Branchville Cemetery, Pines Road, in Branchville.
