Jared A. Barlage was a people person.
His easy smile, vibrant wit and affable personality were well-suited for his career in the political arena.
""Jared had the kind of sense of humor that could make a person not just chuckle but belly laugh out loud,"" said his friend, Rick Robinson of Fort Mitchell. ""I'm thinking about a lot of the one-liners he told me that would make me laugh – most of which are not printable in a family newspaper but are absolutely true.""
""He was the person everybody hoped would show up. People wanted him to sit with them at their table,"" said his sister, Amy York of Alexandria, Va.
Mr. Barlage died from complications of liver disease Sunday, Dec. 20 in Odessa, Texas. He was 43.
He grew up in Edgewood and graduated from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills. He earned his degree from Northern Kentucky University. His interests in politics were piqued when he joined the university's Young Republicans Club.
He worked with former Republican State Representative H. Lawson Walker II, was an intern with former Republican Sen. Jim Bunning, a lobbyist for the American Wind Energy Association and a liaison and director of government affairs for 14 years with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. He was a member of the Kentucky Society of Washington and was an advocate for the state.
""He absolutely loved his job with the Kennedy Center,"" his sister said. ""He truly loved the people he met, both the politicians and the celebrities. He was glad to know they were like 'regular old people.'""
With budget cuts, he left the Kennedy Center and was pursuing a position with the University of Texas
His partner, Will Baker, and mother, Virginia ""Ginny"" Barlage, died previously.
Survivors include his father, Harry ""Hank"" Barlage of Edgewood; sisters Amy York of Alexandria, Va., Sarah Barlage Bilott of Crescent Springs, and Kate Wiseman of Edgewood; and brother Ben Barlage of Edgewood.
Services have been held. A private burial will be at a later date.
