Dr. John A. NABER(1924 - 2013)

Dr. John A. Naber, 88, of Highland Heights and formerly of Ft. Thomas, passed away on Tuesday, April 23rd at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Ft. Thomas following complications from heart surgery. Born in Norwood, OH on September 25, 1924, he was a graduate of St. Xavier High School, where he earned a full scholarship to Xavier University. Upon graduation, he then worked full time and put himself through University of Cincinnati Medical School, graduating in 1947. Dr. Naber then entered into family practice in Southgate, KY with Dr. Richard Kruer where he recalled that when they first started, an office visit cost $2, house calls $3, and to deliver a baby, including pre-natal care, $100. Dr. Naber also administered anesthesia, assisting his surgeon friend Dr. Robert C. Kratz, for a mere $15. It was not unusual for patients to seek treatment at Dr. Naber's farm in Grant's Lick, KY to be treated for a myriad of injuries, including dislocated shoulders and fingers. Dr. Naber continued to practice medicine with Dr. Mike Grainger in Ft. Thomas until his retirement in 1992. Dr. Naber will always be remembered for helping to found St. Luke Hospital (now St. Elizabeth, Ft. Thomas), for his compassion and for the many lasting contributions to his community, friends and family. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Dawn Reynolds and granddaughter, Heather Lynn Marshall. Dr. Naber is survived by his sons, John "Butch" (Ginger) Naber of Dry Ridge, KY, Frank (Trish) Merritt of Williamstown, KY, Patrick (Norma) Naber of Gainesville, FL, Anthony "Johnny" Naber of Alexandria, KY, Danny (d'Arcy) Naber of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; daughters, Susan (Neill) Rubidge of London, England, Claudia (David) Mitchell of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Laura (Mike) Lytle of Grand Rivers, KY; brother, Donald Naber of Norwood, OH; sister, Shirley Sanders of Fairfield, OH and many adoring grandchildren and great grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m., Monday, April 29th at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 30th at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas with the burial to follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH. Memorials are suggested to the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions P.O.
