SHRYOCK

Verna Mae Shryock, 101, passed away peacefully Thursday, August 29, 2013. She was a former resident of Ludlow, Kentucky and Baptist Village in Erlanger, Kentucky. Verna is a graduate of Ludlow High School. She was a loving wife to Edgar Shryock for 67 years until the time of his death in 2001. Verna has been a member of Epworth United Methodist Church since her infancy. She received a plaque from Epworth Methodist recognizing 100 years of service as a Sunday School Teacher, Lay Leader, Pianist and Organist. Verna was named Woman of the Year by the Northern Kentucky District of United Methodist Women, representing over 50 churches. She was also a Kentucky Colonel. Her faith and her family were her life. She enjoyed spending time on the family houseboat, the Gaylo, built by her husband, Edgar, and obtained petition signatures which saved the Delta Queen. She liked to travel with her husband to his Barbershop Quartet conventions. She took her crocheting with her and created many gifts for shut-ins. A competent seamstress, she made all her own clothes and those of her daughters. She was an excellent speller, and usually won the family scrabble games. The nurses at her nursing home attested to her encouraging words and prayers. Her daughters would frequently call her with their concerns, and she would initiate special prayers for them. One daughter recalls youthful experiences of complaining that she "didn't have anything to wear" to church. Verna replied, "God doesn't care what you wear to church…just whether or not you are there." Another daughter, who told her mother about attending an out-of-state, non-sectarian church which closed for summer vacation, received her mother's comment: "God doesn't take a vacation." When the new minister visited Verna at the nursing home, a Baptist facility, and said he was from Epworth Methodist, she replied, "Let's just keep that quiet." Verna is survived by her daughters, Lois Runden of Crestview Hills, Gayle Pauley of Southgate; grandchild, Mark (Monica) Pauley; great grandchildren, Adam (Sabrina) and Parker Pauley; great-great grandchildren, Arsyn, Ashyr and Zoey Pauley. Preceded in death by her brothers, Earl and Ralph Henthorn. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 4, 2013 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM with Service Thursday, September 5, 2013 at 10:30AM all in Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, 316 Elm Street, Ludlow, KY 41016. Memorials are suggested to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1229 Highway Ave., Covington, Kentucky, 41011. Ronald B.
