Ernest Lee Holmes, 76, of Falmouth, KY, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at the family farm in Bracken County, KY. Born in Pendleton County on December 31, 1935, he was the son of the late Donald and Ruth Browning Holmes. He was married to Clara Showalter on June 4, 1955, and they were the first couple married in the Oakland Christian Church, Pendleton County. He graduated from Eastern State Teachers College in 1958 and entered the U.S. Army, where he spent 21 years, attaining the rank of Lt. Col. Ernest received his Master Aviator Wings, Imperial Iranian Army Aviator Wings, the Bronze Star and was presented many honors for valor and service. After retirement from the Army, he flew for Continental Express until retiring again for medical reasons. He was an avid fisherman and loved to be out on the farm. Ernest was a member of the Oakland Christian Church, Army Otter Caribou Association, Hardin-Browning Post #109 of Falmouth, and the Eastern Kentucky University Alumni Association. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Clara Showalter Holmes, he is survived by 2 daughters, Lu Ann Holmes of Park Hills, KY and Lisa (Mark ) LeSuer of Crescent Springs, KY; 1 son, Todd (Joyce) Holmes of Columbus, IN; 4 grandchildren: Andrea (Michael) Aguayo, Brandon Tungett, Justin Holmes, and Jesseca LeSuer; 3 great grandchildren: Abriana, Sophia, and Ava; 1 sister, Charlotte (Charles) Whaley of Falmouth; many nieces and nephews; and many friends around the world.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012, at the Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. The visitation will be from 4-8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Interment will take place in the Showalter Family Cemetery, Bracken County.
