Douglas W. Filkins
1940 - 2013 NORTH ADAMS Douglas William Filkins, 72, of 328 Eagle St., North Adams, died peacefully at home on Thursday, February 14, 2013.
He was born in Hartford, CT on November 20, 1940, son of Robert H. and Verna (Leighton) Filkins. He attended schools in Windsor, CT and graduated from Windsor High School. Mr. Filkins was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving several enjoyable years in England. Doug, a consummate salesperson, was last employed by Zep Manufacturing until his retirement in 2000 due to ill health. Prior, he worked on the road for Carriddi Sales, covering eastern New York State, and then for five years was part owner of Tuff-Kote shops in West Springfield and then North Adams.
Doug was an active member of the First Congregational Church in North Adams. He was also the longtime leader and committee member of Boy Scout Troop #88. Doug, an excellent mechanic and builder of racecars in younger years, took great pleasure in driving and rescuing family and friends stranded on the road. He enjoyed his annual trips to Florida and to NASCAR in Louden, NH with his friend Allen. Doug was devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, the former Julia Perry Clark, whom he married on April 6, 1973 (They would have celebrated their 40th Anniversary this spring); one daughter, Katherine "Kasey" Tassone, (Mark) of North Adams; one son, Daniel Filkins (Mearlene) of Winter Park, FL. He also leaves seven grandchildren, Brian, Lauren, Cameron, Anthony "TJ", Trejan, Jacob, and Quintin; two step grandchildren, Joshua and Troy; one great-grandson, Oliver; one brother, Robert H. Filkins, Jr. of Kennesaw, GA; one sister, Elizabeth Crosby of Columbia, MD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He also leaves his faithful chihuahuas, Pocito and Cocoa.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service for Douglas Filkins will be held at the First Congregational Church in North Adams on Wednesday, February 20th at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the spring in Southview cemetery. There are no calling hours.
