Emily A. Franz
1923-2012 Emily A. Franz, 89, passed into the hands of the Lord at the Franciscan Hospice House in Tacoma, Wash. on November 16, 2012.
Emily was born Sept. 23, 1923 in Adams, Mass., daughter of Anton and Olga Sommer of Adams. After graduation from Adams High School in 1941 she attended the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1945 as a Registered Nurse and U.S. Army Cadet.
While working as a nurse she was swept off her feet by Donald A. Franz, a young naval officer and former high school classmate. After their 1949 marriage she left her position as a surgical nurse to devote herself to her husband and raising their three children. She traveled and lived throughout the world during her husband's 33 year naval career. She loved to travel, shop, collect Asian antiques, and was an incredible cook and accomplished seamstress. She moved to Port Orchard, Wash. to be close to her daughter.
She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Captain Donald A. Franz, USN, Ret.; their oldest son, Donald Jr., and a brother, Anthony Sommer.
She leaves behind her daughter, Deborah (Tom) Franz-Anderson of Port Orchard, Wash.; her son, Roger (Donna) Franz of Clayton, Calif.; grandchildren, Kevin and Sarah Franz of Savannah, Ga.; brothers, Donald Sommer of Adams, Mass. anmd Alfred Sommer of Greenfield, Mass.; and sisters, Olga Kennedy of Kent, Conn., Betty DiLorenzo of Winter Haven, Fla., and Dorothy Waterman of Cheshire, Mass.
